Research in engineering involves multiple phases, where literature review is considered one among them. Wide spread access to internet has provided educational opportunities for students to explore vast resources available online. Lack of focus and exposure to resources, can lead the student to perform random search for literature which can be time expensive and tedious.

This can result in a negative psychological affect on the student and can hinder his research performance. Orientation, exposure to suitable online resources and strategic use of them can mould the student research outcome to be effective and efficient.

This paper provides an insight into the key aspects of online literature search based on cognitive psychology using a concept map. Use of concept map can guide the student through his research in engineering education by fetching effective results in a short period of time.
