Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Much research relating to consumer attitudes toward foreign products has been conducted in large industrialized countries, with big internal markets and a wide range of domestic brands. Little attention has been paid to the case of LDC countries with high levels of foreign trade. This paper seeks to examine and validate the antecedents’ construct of consumer ethnocentrism among Jordanian consumers as LDC’s. Using telephone survey method, a total of 380 usable households questionnaires completed were randomly selected from yellow pages. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) performed on the data reveals that the measurement model and structural model are statistically fit. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis establishes causal relationships between conservatism, negative attitude of tourist’s, and interest in foreign travel, and consumer ethnocentrism. All of the hypotheses were accepted. Interest in foreign travel is found to have the greatest influence consumer ethnocentrism. Negative attitudes towards foreigners tourism is the second-most influential element of the model followed by conservatism. This study both supports and adds to the existing literature. The findings clearly impinge on the somewhat separate literature of country-of-origin effects and branding.
