Thesis Abstract / Summary:

This work explores the ways in which Mexican American university students currently residing in the United States present themselves in a specific social networking site, Facebook. Stemming from the theories of symbolic interactionism, phenomenology and social psychology, we investigate how these individual incorporate their “mexican-ness” in their digital presentations. From the fundamentals in the theories exposed by Goffman, Mead, Schütz and Cooley, we investigate the strategies used to create digital presentations in Facebook in the search to explain and identify the motives and implications of the presence or absence of their “mexican-ness” in their presentations online. Within a re-adaptation of the theories based on face-to-face interaction, we explore how the Self is presented in this new environment represented by the Internet. We explore the Self within the tensions of a globalized, digitalized and postmodern context, seeking to identify how the Self of Mexican American university students are transformed in and within this realm.
