Paper Abstract / Summary:
In this paper we ask a somewhat different question. In the literature it has been stated that
financial liberalization can be beneficial if countries meet certain macro and microeconomic
conditions so that they can enjoy the benefits of higher liquidity and more options for risk
sharing. Could it be the same case for the gains from trade? Specifically, we want to
determine if trade can be growth-enhancing for countries in which the production and,
therefore, export structure is more diversified. Unlike the burgeoning literature on the
impact of trade and growth, empirical work on the impact of trade on growth through
diversification is scant. We consider that characterizing the empirical relationship between
growth and trade interacted with a diversification index makes our main contribution on
this matter. Then we try to shed some light on the impact of trade through diversification on
the macroeconomic volatility.
