Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Public figures are often accused of having some unwanted, stigmatizing personal attributes or of improper behavior. Although a lot of these accusations are officially dropped later, it may be very hard to restore one’s reputation. This thesis tried to reveal mechanisms behind this process. Stigma is an undesirable characteristic of a person that may be related to health, lifestyle, or socioeconomic status.

According to dual-process model of reactions to stigma, the processes elicited by stigmas are divided into two categories: associative and rule-based. A stigma-by-association effect is based on associative processes; it may occur when a person is in a social relationship with a stigmatized person or even when he or she is observed in close physical proximity to a stigmatized person. This research was intended to investigate whether rejected accusations may lead to stigmatization.

Two experiments were conducted as a part of this thesis. The results of the study included several findings, such as lower evaluation of candidates who were asked questions about some negative personal attributes, as compared to those who were only asked questions about positive attributes. Also, participants were able to remember more information about those candidates who answered questions affirmatively, as compared to those candidates who refuted (denied) questions.
