Thesis Abstract / Summary:

This research is a historical and economic discussion about the Euro and the contemporary situation in Europe, with the aim of clarifying the reasons of the economic problems that involved all the European Union, and also to understand why, from 2007, the European Community is tackling an economic crisis never seen before and the reason for which, since the end of 2012, Governments, technical and economists have not been able to find a solution to solve the European's problems.

This study has been developed through historical and economic texts for the genesis section and articles from the most important newspapers in Europe and North America for the contemporary part. Studying from these articles of Summer 2012, it has been possible to know the effects of the Euro-crisis in the Euro area and how politicians faced the problem. Analyzing the consequences of the Euro-crisis and the actual situation of the European economy, it has been important to check what happened in Italy and Greece in 2012 and what the effects of the abolition of the Gold Standard are.

Moreover, it has been taken into consideration the opinion of important academics, journalists, politicians such as Professor Roberto De Mattei, Professor Mario Monti, Giorgio La Malfa, Giancarlo Galli and Noam Chomsky about the creation, the introduction and the problems of Euro since 1992. Some of these academics, also like Paul Krugman, believed that the invention of the Euro and the policy of austerity were a big mistake, others that were enthusiasts of the idea changed their mind after seeing what the Euro really is. Someone else thought, from the beginning, that Euro was a great invention and had no weaknesses.

From the entire research it is possible to understand that the Euro-crisis will last a long time because problems are faced in the wrong way and they are bigger than what was thought.
In conclusion it is very important to learn from the past because errors come from poor choices made in the Twentieth Century, and solutions can be found by observing how other similar crisis were resolved in the past.
