ABSTRACT

The natural disasters occurring in the country has been steadily increasing that had resulted to devastating damages on human life and property. This research assessed the knowledge and compliance of the UST BS in Pharmacy students of Academic Year 2013-2014 with the Disaster Preparedness Plan of the faculty. The objectives of the study are to determine the disaster preparedness plan, to determine the level of knowledge of the students about the policies and procedures, and to determine whether the students comply with the standard operating procedures. The respondents were comprised of two hundred students from 1st-4th year level of BS in Pharmacy selected through random sampling. Moreover, the study was conducted with the use of a survey tool. The data obtained were analyzed with the use of Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS Statistics 20.
As the data were carefully studied, the researchers concluded that majority of the respondents comply with the standard operating procedures given by the disaster committee of the faculty, but more than half of the respondents did not perform well during evacuation drills. The most common reason why students failed to evacuate on time is that they fix things first before leaving. Other reasons are students have a quiz on the same day, students use their cellular phones, and students lack knowledge about the drill. Furthermore, there are different programs being implemented in the faculty like drills, seminars and orientations. And also, the most observed facility inside the building is the emergency equipment. Lastly, there is no significant difference in the level of knowledge of the students about the policies and procedures stated in the disaster preparedness plan of the faculty when year level is taken in consideration.
