Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Knowing your rice varieties respond to some nutrient limiting soil, financial, and peculiar environment situations is but of great help to the farmers since it provides further information to choosing of right variety to be planted. This study was conducted to determine the respond of different rice varieties and line to indigenous supply of NPK in the soil through morphological assessment. Soil analysis was determined using Minus One Element Technique (MOET) which shows P and K elements were severely limiting in the soil. The study was carried out using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six treatments (varieties developed in the Philippines like NSIC Rc222, 238, 158, 226, 240, and Matatag 11) and three replications.

Results showed that NSIC Rc240 performs better compared to other varieties and line evaluated in terms of plant height, root length, shoot and root biomass. However, the most number of tillers was taken from Matatag 11. In terms of the root:shoot biomass ratio, highest was obtained in NSIC Rc238 while lowest in NSIC Rc240. The results imply that at peculiar environment situation where resources are limiting, the use of NSIC Rc240 is recommended but still need for further evaluation. Matatag 11 which shows promising result directly involved in yield attributes could also be a good source of planting material. Root:shoot biomass ratio suggests that at higher ratio would make rice plant less efficient to limiting soil while lower ratio shows promising efficiency for morphological characteristics.
