Book Abstract / Summary:

One of the major factors which can affect the viability performance of seeds is the method of extraction. Oftentimes, seed extraction determines the success of seedling vigor performance in tomato. This study was conducted to evaluate the seedling vigor of tomato using two methods of seed extraction as of manual (fermentation) and chemical (hydrochloric acid) and two varieties of tomato (dwarf green and dwarf white varieties) through number of days to seedling emergence, number of days to 50% development of true leaves, and average number of days to 50% development of true leaves. It was laid out using Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments (two varieties and two methods of extraction combination) and three replications.

The same results obtained on average number of days to seedling emergence in terms of varieties and methods of seed extraction which means regardless of the variety and/or method of seed extraction used, there is no significant difference. In terms of the average number of days to 50% development of true leaves, T3 (chemical method on dwarf green variety) has the shortest number of days. Data further suggested, that seedling vigor is not much affected with the method and variety used because it is governed primarily with the genetics of the crop. However, the use of chemical method of seed extraction gave advantage on the number of days by which true leaves emerged from the plant the earliest.
