Thesis Abstract / Summary:

This study compared the efficiency of the reader services under the traditional and digitized system in the different libraries of the Naga College Foundation, during the School Year 2013-2014.

The following questions were answered: 1. What is the efficiency level of the reader services in terms of access, utility and reliability before digitization?; 2. What is the efficiency level of the reader services using the prototype digital library system?; 3. Does the extent of efficiency of the existing and the digital reader services significantly vary?; 4. What internal and external factors are associated with the efficiency level of the digital library reader services?
The descriptive cross-sectional and development methods were used. Data were provided by the 395 college students, 45 high school students, 19 elementary pupils chosen through quota sampling and all the 84 full time faculty members representing all departments in the school. A questionnaire was the primary data-gathering tool supported by unstructured interview and observation. Data collected were treated statically through the weighted mean, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) or F-test, Kendall Coefficient of Concordance (W) and Chi-Square (X²).
Major findings were: 1.) Before digitization of the library materials, the respondents primarily accessed the material they need by looking for them directly from the shelves (Wm=3.16) where they spent an average of 29.72 minutes. Paper and pen, (Wm=3.08), were highly used in obtaining the contents of topic/lessons from the material where they spent a mean of 36.36 minutes. An average of three (3) books were used containing the topic/lesson they needed. 2.) When the prototype digital library system was in place, the respondents looked for the material they needed directly from the computer (Wm=2.97) where they spent a mean of 24.13 minutes in accessing them. However, copying the content using paper and pen (Wm=3.08) was still highly used where they spent a mean of 31.76 minutes. They used an average of five (5) Websites/portals to complete the discussions of the topics/lessons needed. 3.) The ANOVA showed that the F-value=0.875 was lower than the critical values of F2, 2 (0.05a=19; 0.01a=99.01) and F1, 2 (0.05a=18.51); 0.01=98.49). 4.) The respondents generally agreed on the internal factors (Wm=2.63) as well as the external factors (Wm=2.96) perceived to be associated with the efficiency of the digitized library reader services. Internal factors yielded a value of W=0.56 while the external factors, W=0.79, which meant that there were moderate and high correlations; the internal factors resulted to X2=19.6; external factors, X2=15.8. These values were higher than the critical value at 0.05a.
It is concluded that the respondents had an intensive use of the library reader services before and when the prototype digital library system was in place. The latter was efficient in providing services to the clients. There were numerical differences in the values pertaining to the efficiency of the library reader services in terms of access, utility and reliability before and when it was digitized. This indicated that the latter was better than the former. However, there was no variation on the level of efficiency as proven by the F-test. This could be attributed to the fact that the assessment was done shortly after the digitized system was in place. There were significant internal and external factors associated with the efficiency of the digitized library reader services.
It is recommended that assessments of the efficiency of the digitized library reader services be further made using the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) standards. This would align the development program of the library and fully satisfy the requirements of the PACUCOA aside from making further improvements on the prototype digital library system. Positively addressing the internal and external factors associated with the efficiency of the digitized library reader service should be done to beef up the services to the clients. Another evaluation should be conducted on the efficiency of the digitized library system after a year or more to give the students and faculty a longer exposure and experience in using it.
