Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Understanding how local farmers rely in their knowledge on farming is the most important thing to consider in providing appropriate approach for technology promotion. This study was conducted to document existing soil fertility management practices of Meranao rice farmers in one of the municipalities in Lanao del Sur. This was carried out through one-on-one interview with the farmers using prepared survey questionnaire where interviewers were students in Soils 2 (Soil Fertility Improvement and Management) subject.

Results showed that majority of the respondents were male, elementary undergraduate, aged 21-40 years old, with farming experience of more than 25 years, with three household members working in the farm, and whose gross income in one cropping season ranged from Php 20,000 to 60,000 per hectare production. The existing crop pattern in the area is monoculture rice-rice-rice. Most of the respondents were religion-bounded which make them avoid farming rituals while others still believe in indigenous knowledge practices such as chanting before planting, cosmos signaling, and following Arabic calendar as basis for planting. Respondents differentiate fertile and infertile soils based on its color (black color for the former and red color for the latter). They could attest soil deterioration and intensive cropping as majority’s given reason. They also practiced the following: fallowing for at least one month to three months depending on the onset of rain, burning of crop residues, and tillage practices such as plowing, harrowing, rotavating, and final leveling. They were also dependent on chemical fertilizers where they often apply it twice at 14 days after transplanting and 14 days after the first fertilizer application. Four bags of Urea and 4 bags of Complete (14-14-14) in a hectare basis were the rates and fertilizer materials used. Their yield ranged from 2.60-3.90 tons/ha depending on the season which higher in dry than wet season. With this very limited yield, respondents identified concerns and give recommendation to resolve this problem. Among of these were sharing of knowledge by the elders to the community leaders or chieftains, restore bayanihan values, and right attitude or positive outlook towards rice farming. Respondents were also very much willing to use organic fertilizers as substitute to chemical fertilizers through which the government should conduct seminars on how they can locally produce organic fertilizer.
