Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Agricultural wastes are everywhere and utilization of these to convert into cash goes with the saying that “In a natural world there is no such thing as wastes”. This study was conducted to: 1) evaluate the growth performance of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus Fr.) using agricultural waste in five substrate combination; 2) evaluate its basidiocarp performance; and 3) determine the Return of Investment (ROI) in growing oyster mushroom using agricultural waste in five substrate combination. It was laid out in Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments replicated three times. The following were the treatments: T1- Cassava Waste (CW), T2- Cassava Waste + Rice Straw (CW + RS), T3- Cassava Waste + Corncobs (CW + CC), T4- Cassava Waste + Dried Water Hyacinth (CW + DWH), and T5- Cassava Waste + Abaca Waste (CW + AW).

Results revealed that all the agricultural wastes did not significantly differ in terms of length of stalk, diameter of basidiocarp, and yield. However, T5- Cassava Waste + Abaca Waste (CW + AW) was found to have longer length of stalk, wider diameter of basidiocarp, highest yield, shorter number of days from inoculation to harvesting and highest ROI compared to other treatments.
