Thesis Abstract / Summary:

India has been known from prehistoric times as the land of spices. India possesses many innate advantages over other spice producing countries - its large genetic base, varied soil and climatic conditions, and skilled human power. The biggest handicap in black pepper export is the high cost of the product. Concerted efforts for producing clean black pepper at competitive prices are urgently needed. In this back ground, the present study was carried out to to apply the latest econometric models to analyse the production and export performance of black pepper and suggest relevant policy measures. Dindigul district was purposively selected for the present study. Thus the total sample size was 100.It was observed that the area, production and productivity of black pepper were in decreasing trend during 2000-01 to 2011-12. Even though farmers of Group II farms had been found efficient with higher yield, farmers of Group I farms had emerged as price-efficient producers in terms of lower cost of production and higher net returns per hectare in black pepper production system in the study area. It was further inferred from GARCH analysis that black pepper price exhibited persistent volatility. Research output to overcome the production constraints becomes pivotal. The growth of black pepper production sector will lead to a significant growth in on-farm employment opportunities. It plays a vital role in accomplishing inclusive growth that is being upheld today in Indian development strategy. It was further inferred from the study that black pepper price exhibited persistent volatility. In the meanwhile, there is substantial scope for creating new jobs through value addition in black pepper considering present international trade scenario. Thus envisaged increase in share of value added products in the export basket of black pepper needs strengthening of processing facilities both on farm and outside. Thus the black pepper industry will help the country to achieve its goal of more than 10 per cent growth rate in GDP and to sustain the same.
