Thesis Abstract / Summary:

This research is focused on developing non-chemical methods for controlling parasitic nematodes of small ruminants; the single greatest constraint to the development of this industry in the locality and many other parts of the province. Testing herbal medication can validate and enhance existing local practices and potentials of various botanicals found in Romblon province, and at the same time will benefit our farmers in safeguarding their animals’ well-being. An experimental method was used to evaluate the anthelmintic potency of different indigenous plants such as betel nut, papaya and mahogany seeds made into powder, diluted with water and administered by drenching as anthelmintic for endoparasites in small ruminants. Based on the findings of the study, the potency of plant-based vermicides are comparable to the control group (abendazole) in terms of parasites’ eggs and adults expelled in fecal matters of sheep and goats. Hence, the use of herbal dewormer as an alternative control for endoparasites in goats and sheep is suggestively endorsed.
