Thesis Abstract / Summary:

In the present work, DLC films were prepared by electron beam deposition technique and their biocompatibility has been investigated by studying the variation in G- band position and nano-crystalline diamond phase in the films. Raman spectroscopy was used to study the structural properties of as-grown and heat treated DLC films. Raman spectrum for untreated DLC films confirms the presence of Si substrate peak at 515 cm-1, nano-crystalline diamond phase at 1177 cm-1 and G- band at 1795 cm-1. In our case Raman peak shifted to higher level. In order to study the effect of heat treatment on properties of the material, the films were thermally annealed at 220 Co for 20 minutes. Raman analysis shows G- band shifted to lower level which shows an increase in sp3 content in the films. Nanocrystalline diamond like carbon phase also shifted to lower level where as no change observed in the case of Si peak. Observed increase in the sp3 content for annealed DLC sample confirms the hemocompatibility for biomedical applications.
