An initial step for predicting the customer arrival rates, reducing customer wait times, forecasting the future system loads to produce the scheduling the service facilities to keep the operation cost low.
This report contains the analysis of a multiple server queue system and single server queue system for a brand new upcoming store. A national retail chain has launched its first store in Pune, India with a lot of media publicity. The manager wants to ensure that the customer-service is excellent. He wants to plan for adequate capacity in the supermarket store.
We will review the efficiency of the and M/M/1 queue model and M/M/C queue model used in terms of arrival time, waiting time in the system, service time, and departure time. We have developed a user-friendly windows .net application to simulate the model M/M/C and M/M/1 queue model called Supermarket Checkout System Simulator. This interface enables users to interactively specify a wide range of system parameters to analyze results, all without exposing them to the simulation model’s components. In addition, we will look at how changing the number of registers will help to reduce the customers’ wait time and to get them out from the system in a desired time. Also, we will examine the system from manager’s point of view to keep the operation cost low by providing educated calculation and suggestion to open/close billing counters.
Unlike weather forecasting, Customer Arrival forecasting can be performed with a high degree of accuracy. In this project we will study the data which is a combination of trace driven data and real-time data : a hybrid approach, to not only improve the efficiency of the supermarket checkout system, but to create projections for future growth, changes and special events, so that the store be prepared for any eventual scenarios.
