Ceriops decandra is a mangrove species under the Family Rhizophoraceae. Its conservation status is nearly threatened (NC) based on the International Union for Conservancy of Nature (IUCN). Studies relative to this species is very poorly documented in the Philippines. This paper is a review of the present literature and studies about C. decandra. It aimed to provide information about the species and conservation approaches for its sustainable management and conservation.
Brackishwater aquaculture, inappropriate land use plan,and other coastal development activities have contributed to the rapid decrease in population of the species. Local initiatives through community-based management of mangroves, information, education and communication awareness campaign, establishment of marine protected areas (MPA) and nurseries for plant propagation and direct selling of propagules, partnerships with external stakeholders through corporate social responsibility (CSR) memorandum of understanding and agreements are basically the conservation efforts and approaches implemented in Calatagan Mangrove Forest Conservation Park that play a significant impact in the conservationof the threatened species.
More intensive studies on its population ecology through statistical modeling techniques must be conducted to assess the general status of the species. Monitoring and evaluation of the conservation approaches to determine the effectiveness of the implementation is also recommended for sustainability of the programs.
