Thesis Abstract / Summary:

Objectives:

This study sought answer to the following questions:

1. What is the extent of effect of the educational attainment of the parents on the development of reading skills through print media as perceived by the male post-foundation students of   the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman?

          1a. Is there a significant difference on the extent of effect of the educational attainment of the parents on the development of reading skills through print media as perceived by the male post-foundation students in the   colleges of technology of the Sultanate of Oman?

2. To what extent do the post-foundation students read print media as perceived by the male and female post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman?

2a. Is there a significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students of the College of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the extent the post foundation students read print media?

3. What is the level of knowledge of the post foundation students on the parts of reading materials as perceived by the male and female students in the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman?

3a. Is there a significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the level of knowledge of the post foundation students on the parts of reading materials?

4. What is the degree of importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students as perceived by the male and female students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman?

4a. Is there a significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students of colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the degree of importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students?

5. What is the level of adequacy of print media read by the post-foundation students as perceived by the male and female students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman?

5a. Is there a significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students in the College of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the level of adequacy of print media read by the post-foundation students?

 

Null Hypothesis

 

                1. There is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the extent of effect of the educational attainment of the respondents’ parents to the development of the post foundation students’ competencies in terms of print media.

                2. There is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students of the Colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the extent the post foundation students read print media.

                3. There is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students Colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the level of knowledge on the parts of print media reading materials.

                4. There is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the degree of importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students.

                5. There is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the level of adequacy of print media read by the post-foundation students.

 

Scope and limitation of the Study

This paper determined the reading comprehensions of the students through use of print media advertisements. The following categories: entertainment, services legal notices, sales of products, job vacancies, travels and schools ads were also part of the question.

A questionnaire was formulated to obtain relevant learner factors that affected the respondents’ reading comprehensions of print advertisements that included: educational attainment of parents, exposure to the print media, parts of the print media, importance of print media and adequacy of print media.

The study was conducted to the eight hundred eight (808) male and female students of the   colleges of technology, Sultanate of Oman within 3 colleges of technology’s 3 departments namely: Information technology, Business studies and Engineering.

 

Summary of Findings

                1. The educational attainment of the respondents’ parents affects the development of the students reading skills through print media to the least extent as perceived by the male post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                1a. The educational attainment of the respondents’ parents affects the development of the students reading skills through print media to the moderate extent as perceived by the female post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                1b. the educational attainment of the respondents’ parents affects the development of reading skills through print media to a moderate extent as perceived by the male and female post-foundation students of the   colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                The t- computed value of 4.2835 is greater than the tabular value of 1.812 at 5% level of significance. The difference is significant thus, the null hypothesis is rejected. Therefore, there is a significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the extent of effect of the educational attainment of the respondents’ parents to the development of reading skills through print media.

                2. The male post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived that they sometimes read print media.

                2a. The female post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived that they sometimes read print media.

                2b. The male and female post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived that they sometimes read print media.

                The t- computed value of 0.0300 is less than the tabular value of 1.761 at 5% level of significance. The difference is not significant thus, the null hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, there is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students of the   colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the frequency of reading the print media.

                3. The male post-foundation students of the colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived that they are moderately knowledgeable on the parts of reading materials.

3a. The female post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived that they are moderately knowledgeable on the parts of reading materials.

3b. The male and female post-foundation students of the  Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived that they are moderately knowledgeable on the parts of reading materials.

                The t- computed value of 0.5386 is less than the tabular value of 1.833 at 5% level of significance. The difference is not significant thus, the null hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, there is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the level of knowledge of the post-foundation students on the parts of reading materials.

                4. The male students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived the importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students as moderately important.

4a. The female students of the Colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived the importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students as moderately important.

4. The male and female students of the Colleges of technology in the Sultanate of Oman perceived the importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students as moderately important.

The t- computed value of 0.2727 is less than the tabular value of 1.771 at 5% level of significance. The difference is not significant thus, the null hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, there is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students of Shinas College of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the degree of importance of knowing the parts of the print media materials among the post-foundation students

5. The level of adequacy of print media read as perceived by the male post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman is moderately adequate.

5a. The level of adequacy of print media read as perceived by the female post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman is moderately adequate.

5b. The level of adequacy of print media read as perceived by the male and female post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman is moderately adequate.

The t- computed value of 0.8732 is less than the tabular value of 1.761 at 5% level of significance. The difference is not significant thus, the null hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, there is no significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female post-foundation students of the   Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman on the level of adequacy of print media read.

 

Conclusions

                1. The parents’ educational attainment has a moderate effect on the development of the reading skills through print media of the post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                2. Reading of print media is sometimes practiced by the male and female post-foundation students of the   Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                3. The male and female post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman are just moderately knowledgeable on the part of reading materials.

                4. The parts of the print media materials are moderately important to the male and female post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                5. There are moderately adequate print materials for post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman to read.

 

Recommendations

 

                1. The teachers should maximize the parents’ contribution to the development of the reading skills through print media of the post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                2. The teachers and university officials should fully utilize print media materials in the development of the reading skills of the post-foundation students of the colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman.

                3. More practice on the identification of the parts of the print media materials should be given to the students by the teachers.

                4. The teachers should expose and teach the parts of reading materials to the post-foundation students of the Colleges of Technology in the Sultanate of Oman for them to understand the importance.

                5. The university official should provide more print materials for the students to read as forms of exposures and conditioning.
