This study considers the challenges of managing and maintaining enterprise computer storage systems. These storage systems are comprised of SCSI and Fibre Channel hard drives configured as direct attached, network attached or storage area network devices. Primary among the challenges are the problems of efficiently detecting and predicting device failures and expediting recovery to minimise exposure to data loss.
Various device failures are considered and their effects on system performance explored. Device attributes that can be used as indicators of health status are examined and evaluated as well as various ways to utilise this information to address the problem at hand.
A method for centralised remote monitoring and diagnosis of disk drives is then proposed and demonstrated. The prototype system created to demonstrate remote monitoring and diagnosis of storage devices is presented in detail. The field tests performed to demonstrate the operation of the prototype system are presented and results evaluated.
This study concludes that the proposed centralised method for remote monitoring and management of enterprise data storage systems is effective for identifying problems with devices. In addition, predicting device failures may be possible with further work.
