Dissertation Abstract / Summary:

The dissertation focuses on the role of music in the cognitive and emotional growth of the student in the secondary school. Aesthetics is playing an increasingly less important part in the school curriculum and this factor is leaving little space for the students to develop both cognitively and emotionally. Music is being treated as an extra-curricular activity, and in some cases it is practically non-existent. Two research methods of data collection have been employed in this study. Questionnaires have been distributed to Form 2 students in six secondary state schools and a government music school. Moreover, questionnaires have been administered to Heads of schools in order to find out about the role of the school ethos in promoting aesthetics. One-to-one interviews have been conducted with individuals who have completed secondary education having had music as part of their education. The most significant finding in this research was the paradox between adolescents' attachment to music as an interest outside of school and the importance attached to it as a schoool subject. Adolescents saw 'school music' as something separate and inferior to 'real music'. Furthermore, the findings show that music plays an important role in the cognitive and emotional development of the adolescent.
