Paper Abstract / Summary:

Marginal research exists in terms of evaluating physical activity, active recreational activities, exercise, and active sports participation among individuals with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities (e.g., intellectual, learning, cardiovascular, chronic respiratory, neuromuscular, mental disorders) are not meeting the recommended guidelines of physical activity and exercise and active sports participation. As a result, health issues could develop (Keating, Guan, Piñero, & Bridges, 2005). There is a need to identify the health factors, which influence regular physical activity, active recreational activities, exercise, and active sports participation among this population. The idea is that this population will adopt beneficial health practices, and participate in physical activities, exercise, active recreational activities, and active sports throughout their lifespan.

Numerous studies have confirmed that physical activity and exercise are imperative to health maintenance, disease prevention, psychological and social well being, and that it enhances the overall quality of life (Kamarudin & Omar-Fauzee, 2007; Kujala, Kaprio, Sarna, & Koskenvuo, 1998; Kaplan, Strawbridge, Cohen, & Hungerford, 1996; Paffenbarger et al., 1993). The literature overwhelmingly advocates participation in physical activity, exercise, and active recreational activities as a component of maintaining sound health. Individuals with disabilities are not meeting regular physical activity and exercise recommendations; as a result health complications could develop (Keating, Guan, Piñero, & Bridges, 2005). It should be noted that individuals with disabilities have a higher prevalence of physical and exercise inactivity and active sports non-participation than individuals without disabilities (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1996).
