Thesis Abstract / Summary:

This study was conducted to determine the usefulness of Intop card game as used in teaching operations of integers with the freshmen students of Cabitan National High School (SY 2010-2011) as respondents.

Specifically it sought answers to the following questions:

1.      What are the performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers under the traditional instruction?

2.      Is there a significant difference between the performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers under the traditional instruction?

3.      What are the performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers using Intop as a mnemonic card game?

4.      Is there a significant difference between the performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers using Intop as a mnemonic card game? and

5.      Is there a significant difference between the performance levels of freshmen students between the traditional instruction and the use of Intop as a mnemonic card game?

This study made use of the experimental research design in which two groups of 23 respondents were given pre-tests, treatment, and then post-tests. The statistical tools used in analyzing data included arithmetic mean and t-tests for independent and dependent samples.

The findings of this study are as follows:

1.      The performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers under traditional instruction are 43.70% and 49.80% mean percentage scores, respectively.

2.      There is a significant difference between the performance level in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers under traditional instruction.

3.      The performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers using Intop as a mnemonic card game are 46.10% and 56.75% mean percentage scores, respectively.

4.      There is a significant difference between the performance levels in the pre-test and post-test of freshmen students in operating integers using Intop as a mnemonic card game.

5.      There is a significant difference in the performance levels of freshmen students between the traditional instruction and the use of Intop as a mnemonic card game.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, these conclusions were drawn:

1.      Both the traditional method of teaching and the use of Intop card game in instruction increase the performance levels of students in operating integers.

2.      The performance in operating integers of students who participated in Intop card games is better than those who underwent traditional instruction.

3.      The use of Intop card game in teaching operations of integers is a more effective strategy in building mastery and confidence with numbers among all types of students.

4.      Not only did the use of Intop card game in instruction improve performance in operating signed numbers, but also received good feedback from students who played the game. According to them, they enjoyed the game and found fun with numbers.

Recommendations

In view of the findings and conclusions generated by this study, the following recommendations are given:

1.      That Intop must be used as a mnemonic card game in teaching operations of integers to help students develop mastery and confidence with numbers, thus making them love the subject mathematics.

2.      That teachers should develop other mnemonic devices and games to make the learning of mathematical facts and principles easier for the students.

3.      That Intop card game should be published for educational purposes.

4.      That the use of Intop card games in instruction should be accompanied by giving meaningful ideas about and real-life applications of integers.

5.      That other studies on the use of Intop card games in instruction may be carried out in a wider scope, including its effect on the behavior of students, to evaluate its effectiveness in raising students’ achievement in mathematics and in developing positive attitude towards the subject. Other related studies may be conducted to test the effect of varying durations of playing Intop card game on students’ performance in mathematics.
