The study investigated predictors on the word problem solving proficiency of the general science major students of Philippine Normal University Negros Occidental Branch. Specifically, it aimed to identify the level of proficiency in word problem solving of the general science major students in terms of identifying the given and the unknown, formulating algebraic expressions, manipulating algebraic expressions, and solving the equations. This study also looked into general science major students’ level of proficiency when grouped according to the selected variables. The researcher personally developed the word problem solving proficiency test following principles of test construction. Results show that the level of word problem solving proficiency of the general science major students is average. General science major students find difficulties in manipulating algebraic expressions but are good enough in identifying the given and the unknown. Furthermore, results reveal that when respondents are grouped according to the selected variables, the level of their proficiency in word problem solving is average. Results also indicate that study habits, discussion of problem solving and attitude towards mathematics are predictors of word problem solving proficiency. The study recommends instructors/professors handling mathematics subjects to strengthen the teaching of word problem solving. They are also encouraged to developed learning exercises that will enhance problem solving skills of the students. The study also recommends students to develop a desirable study habits. They are also encouraged to discuss possible solutions to solve word problems among their classmates during their vacant and free time. They are likewise encouraged to develop positive attitude towards mathematics and word problem solving because students who have positive attitude will surely like and love mathematics and word problem solving.
