Paper Abstract / Summary:

The main purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of mathematics major students toward the use of technology in learning mathematics. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the attitudes of mathematics major students toward the use of technology in learning mathematics in terms of the sub-scales such as behavioral engagement, confidence with technology, mathematics confidence, affective engagement, and attitudes to learning mathematics with technology. The study also determines differences in the attitudes of mathematics major students toward the use of technology in learning mathematics when grouped according to gender, year level, and type of school graduated during high school. To gather the necessary information on the attitudes of the mathematics major students toward the use of technology in learning mathematics, the researcher adopted the Mathematics and Technology Attitude Scale (MTAS) developed by Pierce et. al., (2007). Results of the study show that the attitudes of the mathematics major students toward the use of technology in learning mathematics when sub-scales were taken altogether are very satisfactory. However, when sub-scales were taken individually, their attitudes were outstanding in terms of affective engagement but were only satisfactory in terms of behavioral engagement and confidence with technology. Results also indicate that there is a significant difference in the attitudes of the mathematics major students toward the use of technology in learning mathematics when grouped according to gender. Males exhibit better attitudes toward the use of technology in learning mathematics than the females. Along this line, the study recommends that integration of technology more specifically the use of computer in the teaching mathematics should be undertaken. Likewise, it recommended that mathematics major students should develop positive attitude towards mathematics learning with technology in the classroom. Lastly, instructors and professors are encouraged to give equal importance to male and female students in learning mathematics. Let us erase the notion that mathematics is a male dominated subject.
